Musical Study

David began playing trumpet at age 11 after his music teacher told him Euphonium would be too big for him to pick up (let alone play)! After playing in high school concert bands and rock bands David joined Will Upsons' Rainbow Coast Big Band which - along with sit-ins with the South-Coast Jazzmen - gave him his first experiences playing with well accomplished jazz musicians.

David studied jazz trumpet at WAAPA in 1992 and 1996 and more recently a Diploma in Music (Song-writing) and at Great Southern Institute of Technology (Denmark Campus). The skills of a jazz musician with classical and contemporary grounding have allowed David to play most any style with literally hundreds of bands on trumpet and multiple instruments.

David is recently completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Music) online with the University of Southern Queensland, and is currently studying for Honours, with a focus on composition and arranging in World-Jazz styles.

Songwriting

David merges styles like jazz, blues, reggae, ska, hip-hop, funk and more to create unique and original sounds and songs.  Lyrically David explores environmental and humanitarian issues plus being human (i.e. Love). David was nominated for the WAM awards (Jazz) for his song "Tide" in 1999 and has studied a Diploma in Music (Songwriting).  David often finds inspiration for songwriting in nature.

Musical Direction

David has fullfilled the role of musical director and facilitator in many bands. He has been musical director for Lunar Circus multiple times. In 2010/2011 David was musical director for Denmark Arts/Future Landing's Brave New Works #18 contemporary dance project "Wild Conversations".

David has co-produced compilation albums "Forests Forever" (a fundraiser for the WA Forest Alliance) and "Offset" and "A Slice of Denmark" with Denmark Arts subcommittee DenMusic (as a fundraiser to help Denmark Arts go carbon neutral).

Environment and Sustainability

As well as pursuing a professional musical career, David has been involved  in environment and sustainability organisations and campaigns since 1995. He is currently the Secretary of the Albany Community Environment Centre Inc.
